Making the Best of Your Internet Access General Internet Access Questions Which network provides my Internet access? Our unlimited Internet access is provided by top-tier Internet Service Providers (ISP). What do you mean by "unlimited Internet access"? This simply means that there is no limit to the amount of time you can spend online with your Internet access account. Of course, this supposes that you are using a charge-free dial-up access number. (Please note that you are responsible for any telephone charges associated with your Internet access. Please read our Online Service Agreement for details.) Will I pay toll charges? Most U.S households can dial up via a charge-free telephone number. (Click here to check for Internet access numbers in your state.) To find your Internet access numbers, confirm the numbers we give you with your local telephone company. If you do find that you must pay charges to use the Internet through us, check back often as our network is expanding rapidly towards full coverage of the United States. Should I install another telephone line? It is not necessary to have more than one phone line to access the Internet from your home. Keeping in mind that your main line will be busy while you are online, you may want to consider whether you'd prefer to use a voicemail service that will pick up automatically when you are online, or to install a second phone line. Please note that you are solely responsible for any and all charges associated with installing a second phone line. Will I get a busy signal when I try to dial in? Our Internet Service Providers work hard to keep busy signals to a minimum. We think you'll be impressed. Making sure our network performance is always excellent is a top priority and we are constantly pursuing new ways to build out our capacity. Can I get a cable modem? How about DSL? Currently, we are only offering dial-up modems. From time to time, you may hear of new ways of accessing the Internet, with names like cable modem, DSL, ISDN, and T-1. We're actively looking at ways we can bring higher speeds to our members as these technologies become more available and less expensive. We're keeping a close eye on the market, and hope to offer higher-speed access in the future. Can I still use AOL? Yes, but you will be missing out on great benefits. AOL has a billing option called BYOA that lets you access its services through your own Internet Service Provider. Current AOL users can find out more about this service under the AOL keyword "billing." And don't let your Instant Messenger service keep you from coming to us because you can still use that too. Can I change my Internet access number after registering as a member? Yes. Here's how:
Making the Best of Your Internet Access What about email? PeoplepPC Online gives every member one email box when they sign up. Can I use my Internet access account to dial into my office or other networks? Yes. Your membership comes with standard dial-up software. What should I do to keep my kids from seeing Internet sites that might not be appropriate for them? The best way to protect kids on the Internet and to teach them to be smart Internet users is to spend time with them when they are online. Use the Internet together. Talk about all the educational resources, entertainment, and global information the Internet has to offer. It is also extra smart for families to keep their computers in an open area where adults can observe and converse with kids as they surf the Internet. If you are interested in installing software that restricts the sites your kids can visit, a variety of products are available for sale online and at your local software retailer. What do you do about "spam"? "Spam," commercial email you don't want and didn't ask for, can be a real headache for people with email. We stop spam by deleting it before it gets to you, using a technique called server-level filtering. Our powerful filters automatically screen incoming messages for telltale signs of spam in transmission protocols and message headers. As a result, messages identified as spam are blocked before they reach your inbox. A staff of email security experts is dedicated to preventing spam and other forms of email abuse. In constant contact with experts around the world, this team regularly monitors the network for suspicious activity while continuing to develop new prevention techniques.
